An Award-Winning children’s book illustrator at Your Service
Hello, my lovely author friends and all. Ananta Mohanta here, and I’m thrilled to be connecting with you all today as an award-winning children’s book illustrator. My heart truly sings when I’m bringing stories to life through vibrant colors and whimsical characters.
Honestly, when I was a child, I would sit for hours with my crayons, creating worlds where animals spoke and stars had names. I’d sketch on the back of school notebooks- a dragon with sunglasses, a flying witch on a big, fat owl. Somewhere along the way, people started telling me, “Hey, your art would look great in a children’s book.” I didn’t know it back then, but those quiet drawing moments would shape my future.
Fast forward a year (and a few hundred doodles later), I found myself working on my first actual project. That moment, when I saw my children’s book illustrations printed beside someone’s story- man, that was surreal. That’s when I knew I was meant for this. That’s when I realized- this is what I meant to do.
Now, it’s been over 15 years, and I have been working full-time in the world of children’s book illustrations.
I didn’t go to any fancy art school. I learned by making mistakes and figuring things out along the way. And honestly, that’s what I love most about children’s book illustrations- they don’t need to be perfect. They need to feel. That’s what matters. The emotion, the whimsy, the weirdness- kids pick up on that. They don’t care if the tree is slightly lopsided. If it makes them smile, wonder, or laugh, then it works.
There are many people out there finding illustrators for a children’s book, and they often think it has to be a daunting, overwhelming process. But honestly? It starts with a conversation. A spark. A spark. A laugh shared over a silly idea – maybe a witch riding a giant owl, or a penguin who dreams of baking cupcakes. That’s where the magic kicks in. That’s where stories are born.
Over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to work with a diverse range of individuals – from first-time authors and small indie publishers to some sweet, slightly nervous parents writing bedtime stories for their children. And you know what? Every one of them came in with the hope. “I just want to someone who understands what I’m trying to say.” That’s what I try to do as a children’s book illustrator – I listen first, then draw.
Now, let me tell you, the world of illustrators for children’s books is wild. I’ve met artists who draw with coffee (yes, really), some who use scissors and glue, and like me, who create entire universes with an iPad and stylus. Some of them are now famous children’s book illustrators, but all of us still get that same nervous excitement when we turn in our final draft.
And yes, I’m one of those children’s book illustrators for hire – but I’m picky about my projects. I need to feel the story. I need to see the colors in my head before I even pick up my stylus. I once turned down a project after a conversation with the authors because my vision and visuals were not aligned with theirs.
If you’re looking for an illustrator for a children’s book, trust your gut. Don’t just go for the most polished portfolio. Look for someone who laughs at your silly idea with respect for your thinking. Someone who sends you rough sketches, someone who is deeply passionate and punctual. Someone who says, “Yes! I see what you’re going for!”
Here’s the truth: being a children’s book illustrator isn’t about being perfect. It’s about being playful, curious, and sometimes a little weird. Honestly, my work as a children’s book illustrator is always changing. And that’s the fun of it. Styles shift, stories shift, but one thing never does: I’m here to bring stories to life in a way that feels magical and true. I’ve always been drawn to art that feels like it belongs with the story- that lifts it up without overshadowing it. And I’ve looked up to so many brilliant illustrators over the years, the ones who set the bar high and made you feel something with just a picture. Their passion inspires me to continue growing, trying new things, and staying curious in my own work.
Anyway, I’ve got a stack of characters waiting to be brought to life on my desk – including an undersea fish village. So, if you’re dreaming up a story and wondering if anyone out there can draw it just right, well, hey, I might be your guy.
